quality of new cedar shingles is it too soft to last?

I was told yesterday if I replace my old rotten cedar shingle siding with new cedar shingles, the wood is not like the stuff that was put on 50 years ago. I was told the new cedar is grown fast and will not last 15 years, even if painted properly. Is this true??

I replaced some trim boards 5 years ago around my patio doors with pine boards and they are rotten again. I was told this was sapling wood and it will have to be replaced regularly. Is this the fate of buying new wood?
