What about prairie instead of colonial? I've seen many pictures of grids on top and not on bottom in window brochures lately, so I guess it's probably acceptable to do so. It's NMS, personally, but it's your house. If you like it, I say do it!

My original choice was the praire but when I saw them in the double hung I didn't like the look at all. I guess it is a matter of choice but I just don't want it to look out of place. Thanks

IMO it depends upon the size of the doublehungs, and the number of grids you want as to what the obscurity of the grids will contribute.

I have three 31 x 72 double hungs with 9/9 grids in my breakfast nook and the obscurity is minimal, if noticeable at all.

Again, IMO omitting the grids in the bottom sash, when all the rest of the windows have them, would look odd.

I am a fan of either grids or no grids altogether.

I did 6 over 1 double hungs in the front of my house and no grids on the back.
I am not sure if I would do full grids and then only top grids where they are both visible.
I actually prefer the look of the partial grids-looks less busy.

Personally, I really like the look of grids in the top sash only. It looks best when it's a simple pattern like the 6/1 in the photo above or 4/1. If you'll look through the photos on Houzz you'll see lots of houses with this design.

You might be making a believer out of me but I would argue that you style home is very specific and probably unrepresentative of what is out there as a standard fare.

Yes you would typically find that type of DH window(like 6/1 or 4/1) in certain types of architecture. Classical and colonial revival,craftsman are some types where I have seen them. Lots of great examples on Houzz. I found that I prefered them to full grills visually. Bonus is that they were cheaper too!
