I take mine out (the bottom part that holds the bags) and wash it with a hose.

I've had a trash compactor for a long time and we put one in the new kitchen, too. If things are smelly when I take out the bag, I just spray inside the compactor with Lysol (or Windex...or anything, in a pinch), let it dry, then put the new bag in.

The trick is to not have smelly things sit in there too long! I also get the compactor bags at Costco.

vampiressrn, I didn't even know that compactors had built-in air fresheners...and I've had one for the past 8 years in two different houses (GE Monogram and now KitchenAid)!

Anyway, we don't put food in ours and rinse containers like plastic juice jugs before putting them in the compactor, so we've never had any smells. :)

The Costco compactor bags are great. Our trash from the compactor usually only goes out to the trash every two weeks, but we do take "food" trash out daily or as needed. However, if that isn't a habit you'd like to adopt, I would imagine that washing and/or Lysol would help get rid of odors.

I sure agree about the Costco compactor bags...those are the ones I use, they are the best. I will have to get some Lysol spray. This isn't something that occurs all the time, typically it is related to food and I do try to empty mine about once a week. Thanks for the suggestions.
