Need design help - cabinets on tile or hardwood/tile mix?

We took down the wall from the dining room to the kitchen and while it would be nice to continue the oak floor into the kitchen, that would just add too much expense right now. So the kitchen will have tile.

With the wall down, I am having a peninsula added between the rooms which will be a little over 5 ft long. Then a 42" walkway and a 27" pantry on the opposite wall. The new cabinet layout went 9" into the dining room, so as the flooring sits right now, the cabinets will straddle the floors.

Will there be any problems if the cabinets rest on both floors, 9" on the hardwood 15" on the tile? Or should I have the floor cut back and the cabinets rest only on the tile? The GC said that if they are at the same level there shouldn't be a problem, but I also worry about expansion/contraction in the wood floor while the tile wouldn't move.

I'm having a difficult time picturing which would be better. Pictures of flooring transitions would be greatly appreciated.

I believe I have a similar set-up to what you are describing. My peninsula sits on top of 2 different floor surfaces, tile in the kitchen and wood in the dining area. The 2 surfaces are at the same level and I have not had any issues. Here are some pictures to help you visualize.

kitty car, Thank You! I needed to see how that looked. Your cabinets look to be right in the middle of the floors, mine would be 9" on wood, 15" on tile if I go this route. I'm not sure if that would look ok. What do you have for a transition between the 2 floors, do they just butt up to each other or is there some type of transition piece under the tile?

Mine are actually slightly uneven as well. I have about 7" on the wood side and 8" on the tile. There is a very thin strip of steel separating the 2 surfaces. With the grout, it is hard to see it.

We did the exact same thing as you are about to do. The wall behind the fridge came down, kitchen extended about 12" into dining room, small 5' penninsula to connect the 2 rooms. The plan was to lay pergo floor and I switched to tile in the middle of the reno because matching the old wood floors in the house was too difficult.

I will tell you this, 5' penninsula is very small, but I like the larger opening. The GC did a good job with the threshold,and the same threshold is at the back door now too. As you can see, my island also overlaps both rooms, and I tied the 2 rooms together with the glass cabinet above the penninsula.

I have to be honest, in my "heart of hearts" is the desire for wood flooring like the rest of my house. I am getting used to the tile (it's pretty, but really too light), but I do wish I had taken the time early on to budget for the wood. Oh well, maybe someday....!!

You are gonna LOVE seeing that wall come down, and the space open up -- You will be Thrilled!!

Thank you Traceee. The wall came down last Tuesday and it was the first time that little kitchen area saw sunlight in many, many years. My old kitchen was 8'9" x 11'3" with about 3' of usable counter, so the 5' peninsula will seem huge to me!
