I had another estimate done from another company and they calculated that I needed a 2.1 ton capacity to properly heat/cool my downstairs. They quoted me the same price (7k) for the XL18 and Tam7 stating that though it was a larger unit, it has two speed settings and would most likely use the smaller setting, but be able to ramp up when needed.

I was also quoted 6k for the xl15 and tam7. Which is the best value for what I would be getting? I don't want to go too large and have issues down the road. All help is appreciated.

First off, I would not drop to a 2 ton. Since you are borderline, stay with 2 1/2 ton system.

Here are 3 systems I would consider. I am a believer in AHRI HP directory and the performance/efficiency numbers. All of these are good. You get a lot of firepower and bang for the buck with the XR13 system I listed. The XL15i system carries 2 extra years on the compressor warranty-from 10 yr to 12 yr and has the proprietary funky condenser top.

Pair with HW Mdl 8321 thermostat and a 7.5-10 KW heat strip.

How do you filter your return air?
