It's difficult to have lamps in the middle of the room if your house does not have floor outlets in the area you want the lamps. Extension cords placed under rugs can be a fire hazard. That's why if any of our readers are planning a new home, they need to determine a couple of different furniture arrangements prior to finalizing their lighting plan. That way they can have floor outlets installed where needed.

For heffmeyer, who asked the question, you may have to modify your furniture layout so that reading areas are closer to a wall where an outlet is located.

Another idea would be to have small lo voltage adjustable recessed lights (or tack lights) put into the ceiling to the left and right of the end of the chairs, so you aren't sitting directly under them but they can shine down on the book you reading and make sure you have them on a dimmer to control the light level, with recessed lights you really need to know where the furniture is being place, with track you have more flexibility.
