If you can afford to have the area of the floor where the gaps are fixed, you'll be glad you did. The gaps are going to not only be dustcatchers but toecatchers as well, especially if you have a dog. We had a dog that caught her toenail on something and riped it out so she had to have surgery. You can have unfinished wood put in there and stained to match the rest of the floor, or refinish the whole floor.

I am thrilled you are keeping the floors. Amazing! If the gaps end up bothering you, you could consult with a person who works/ has experienced with old homes. There are plenty of other sites/ blogs dedicated to older homes.

They are beautiful-don't look so bad from here. Easy enough to fill the worst if need be. Don't sand to "like new-" keep the patina!

I don't restore floors but I would look into the difference between buffing and sanding... I think buffing will help keep patina.... not sure. Need floor people to chime in! Smile! Nice thing about carpet - it really helps preserve the wood - unless a pet wets on it or something! Keep us posted! Sounds like a magnificent home!
