I like the rock wall with the planter to match, but I very much dislike that someone made a shoddy and short extension on it. I would remove that. I like Croton and would want to have some if my zone allowed. Their is a Florida forum that may be useful. I don't know how active it is. You could get advice on the California forum. It stays active.

I, too, would get rid of the raised planter in front of the screen. It detracts without adding any benefits.

Thank you both. Yes, that planter in front of the screened door area. I'll have to get rid of that. I had only thought of bleaching it as it's all discolored from the non working gutters pouring water on it. The gutters are all replaced. Thanks for the mock up Yardvaark...there are the remnants of a pole light in that area that I had planned to replace too.

Bed with palms should be square because everything else nearby is also.

As a part time resident, I'm guessing you look forward to a tropical get-away, with minimal maintenance. I would recommend the following low maintenance plants to look great year round:

Hope Philodendron with Heliconia or Purple Queen would be a fun tropical look.

Plumbego or Copper plant would make a simple, yet colorful low hedge-row if you prefer a more uniform semi-structured feel.

Lantana, Dwarf bougainvillea or Fountain Grasses are some other hardy, easy-going yet colorful foundation plants that you can enjoy for years, then supplement with annuals while you are here.
