Yes very time consuming use paint strippers . very toxic but It can be done.

HI -- Yes ,they can , and there are products that work great now . But it is a lot of work soooo I say take the doors off and send them out to a place that has a dip tank and let them strip them and then you just do what ever is left yourself. Might be worth the cost to you.

Yes! A dip tank. But it won't be cheap, because paint ruins their dip, and they have to drain and dispose of it. How old are the cabinets? Do you think the paint could be lead based? I wouldn't mess with it, personally. Instead Martha Stewar has a tool called a faux bois (think I spelled it right) and it simulates a wood grain finish. A little practice, following the directions, should give you a look similar to natural wood cabinets.

Another thought would be to paint over the white, and go for two tone cabinets: [houzz=]

It would probably be cheaper to replace the teak panels with new plywood veneer core teak panels edgebanded to match. I can't really tell, but it is a pretty dark teak...teak does not take finish, especially paint, well.

HI -- You said it looked like poor quality paint . Can you kind of scrap it off a bit with your fingernail ?. Maybe the paint didn't cover well because they didn't clean them before they painted or they painted over the varnish. So if it is easy to get off with a fingernail , then you could probably get the paint off with one of those soft scrubing sponges or a real fine soft sanding sponge . Let us know if you try.

Shame! I'm having cabinets dipped right now so I will ask my cabinet guru.

What is a dip tank?

It depends on the quality of the paint job. You may be able to remove 90% of the paint with a heat gun in an afternoon. Test please.
