What is the counter?

You obviously chose to go with a more modern and clean look than the typical wood kitchen cabinet. I would probably also opt for something with a more unique look to work with the choices you have made so far. Go to a real tile retailer and you will see many things you wont find at the big box stores. Here is a link to a story right here on Houzz about some new tile materials. I am not suggesting some of the really crazy stuff.. but why not something that you wont see everywhere.

A backsplash is a pretty small area so it's not going to cost you a bundle even if you choose specialty tiles.

It's very true that tile stores will have nicer glass tiles then home centers. Glass tile is very expensive though and sometimes home centers offer the only solutions within a budget. Definitely go to a tile store and see if you can fit the nicer tile into your budget. Dytecture's selection is particularly nice.

I prefer the more subtle color palette in Dytecture's example rather than a high contrast mosaic, which I think will go out of style sooner. Some other nice backsplashes with lighter wood cabinetry (though of course everything depends on what countertop you choose):

Here is the picture of granite (top) and floor tile (bottom). I really like the vertical tile example, and the third one with the silver grout. Where can I get them? I already went to 2 tile stores but they have very limited selection.

The vertical tile in Dytecture's photo is from Ann Sacks. The third photo I included with the silver grout may also be a tile from Ann Sacks, but the information isn't provided by the architect who designed that kitchen. Here's a link to a similar one, however:

I'm worried that a mosaic may look busy with your counter. I like the fourth (in a white or light grey) and fifth photos posted by feeny with your counter and floors .

White subway tile is always fabulous. Classic, neutral, available at reasonale cost, not labor intensive for installation..keep it simple and add spice w/ accessories that can be changed easily. I don't recommend spending a great deal if money on very specific, trendy tile that you may tire of or that may look dated in 2-5 years.

What is a good brand for white subway tiles?

I'm not an expert, so I'm hoping one of the professionals weighs in on this, but my impression has been that most tile companies carry white subway tiles and there isn't a huge difference between them. However, since we were trying to achieve a very vintage look in our 1920's era kitchen, using ivory subway tiles set close together with minimal grouting, we ordered ours from Subway Ceramics, which specializes in tiles for historic renovations. We've been very happy with the quality, but I think you can find cheaper ones that will serve you very well.

feeny is correct, you can get white subway tiles in many places. Some companies make different styles--very clean edges, handmade look, beveled, etc. Find one that you love and go for it! If you find a mosaic that you like and want to add some interest, you can do a focal area over your stove or add an accent strip.

Yes, just from the photographs, that is the one I like best of the ones you've posted. Obviously, you need to look at the tones in person with your granite, floors and cabinets, but I love the subtlety of it.
