Be aware that because of website issues caused when Houzz and Garden Web were joined, that many folks on the tree forums (those who use the Garden Web interface) can't see this post. It is better to post separately on separate forums if you want the most experienced eyes on the question. For instance, I can see this on the landscape forum but not on the tree forum. So you might want to post separately on the tree forum, which is the most appropriate spot for this question.

@ken_adrian I am located in Virginia, Zone 7. I got it home using a utility trailer I pull with my Camry, it was a stretch as you can see from the picture below. Not quite a Prius, but what you pictured was close, lol. I have never perked my soil. Thanks for the links, I will read up and water smarter. There are many river birches in my neighborhood that all do well. My backyard has very little shade so I was gung-ho to get some trees in place quick and probably was a little impatient with regards to tree size. Thanks for the info

Transplant stress. Hopefully it will recover. I had a large tree fall down in a windstorm last year on top of a newly planted river birch. Destroyed the whole crown. I thought the tree was a gonner so I planted another one same size next to it. The gonner tree (which I thought was dead and I was just too lazy to dig it out), sprouted from its roots and is halfway to the size of the $150 new tree in one year. Have faith. However, occasional watering couldn't hurt. The tree I described is planted in wet soil, so it is happy. River birches can tolerate clay and drought if their genes are healthy to begin with.
