Saw a Zebra today!!!!!

It was like seeing a unicorn! I was dropping off some empty planting pots to someone who had posted on my local Nextdoor about wanting them. This dropoff was rescheduled several times, so I think it was fate! I am still in disbelief that I saw it flitting around in his garden! Naturally I stopped at a nearby nursery on the way home to pick up a Paw Paw, but they only had some very tiny fancy and expensive cultivars left. They will have larger (4' usually) reasonably priced natives in the spring. I am very excited and have high hopes - the home where I saw it is only about 1 mile away from mine!

How exciting!!! I hope you plant PawPaws next year and have Zebra Swallowtails!!

I havent seen one of those in years! I thought about getting a Paw Paw tree, but then I learned my neighbor a few doors down had one. I'm going to see if they will let me air layer one next year.

mblan13 - I have never heard of air layering and had to look it up. Pretty cool! I hope you are successful!

And I am still beside myself with excitement! I never planted Paw Paws because I didn't think Zebras were common in my area, even though they are native. I have seen all kinds of butterflies, but never a Zebra, so I figured they hung out in more specialized areas for the species. To see one this close to me is astounding and encouraging. I was literally so shocked when I saw it - like

"AM I REALLY SEEING A ZEBRA?!!!!!"

Even if it takes a few years to get one to visit my yard, I will be happy!

We have about 25 Paw Paw trees on our property and we see a bunch of zebra swallowtails every year
