Island or cabinets?

I'm redoing our kitchen, and want to figure out how to best use a specific space. The kitchen is semi-open to the den, with a stairwell in between. Putting cabinets in front of the stairs isn't ideal, but I'm not sure an island is either. Another option is to add an island (there's room), and put seating in front of the stairs.
(enjoy the mess--still moving)
