You have plenty of space for a console. Put lamps on the console and large artwork on the wall.

What is opposite that wall? If a fireplace or large entertainment unit, then you need to counter balance with another architecturally heavier piece of casegoods, or a visually impactful art installation. We need pix of the entire space and furniture to help you. You may actually have the solution right there in the room, but we can't see it.

The room needs more, taller and better lighting,
A large area rug,
Art....not wall decor,
Window treatments if there are any windows,
Color.

I agree with the console table idea, however, you may want to measure the console table your are considering. I'd go with one that's not too deep. Nice lamp and some art above, and maybe even, if you have a console that allows it, some baskets underneath for storage. Ambient lighting can really help warm up a room. Something like the pic I have inserted, but you could do black, black always give a nice touch. I'm not a fan of the art on this diplay, and the books could be stacked better with the spines facing out, but it's just a general idea because it's not a super deep table. Are you book people or do you have collections to display? Something like these built-ins but in a very slim profile could look great if you have items to style it and the budget to build it.
