Updating oak staircase

I currently have an 80s style oak staircase that I want to update, either with paint or with stain. The rest of our house has light colors on the walls, with dark accents such as granite and some of the furniture. I'm trying to get an updated look that is not heavy.

The spindles will be white, the skirt will be white. I'm just stuck as far as a medium to dark neutral stain or paint! Any help will be greatly appreciated!! They are not completely stripping the varnish, just roughing it up FYI.

Obviously we are changing the carpet as our color palette has changed. Two stains have been tried. I like their tone. I’m not sure whether to go with light or dark. Either way, a little bit of the Oak may show through.
