if you show us the stumo we might be able to id it for you and say if it's likely to grow back.

If you have a lot of shade and the stump rots, I'd go with false solomon seal. Lady ferns do well for me, too. As do marginal shield ferns. I have partial shade, light shade, shade, deep shade and very deep shade. I'm in Maine, now, also zone 6. My Massachusetts friends are now in Zone 7. If you're in the Eastern part of the state, you're probably zone 7. If in the west, I don't know.

Have you considered grinding the stumps, aka removal?

Very hard to tell what they are. I was hoping to see some twigs close up. But going by the bark and what might be opposite buds I'd take a wild guess on lilac for the second one and for the thinner trunk in the top one.

Yes I think lilac is right. We never saw flowers on this one but theres a lilac bush right near it that did. Not really happy my husband took this one out…

I thought about removing the stump but it’s on top of a retaining wall and I’m afraid of what removal might do to the stabilization of the surrounding area. I know nothing about the process so maybe it would have no impact. Also was hoping the cost to cover would be cheaper.

No impact on a retaining wall from stump grinding.

Lilac will normally come back from a stump. But they've been very poorly cut. I'd neaten up the stumps. And make sure the cuts are clean, not scraggly.
