Hi urban oasis - that is Vancouveria hexandra - a native Pac NW plant. Likes moist, shady spots - has a small white flower in spring.

What a charmer! Good to know if I ever find myself in a less arctic climate.

Hi sig123 - Japanese lilac or Syringa reticulata is not a plant that I use. A quick online shows its suitable for USDA zone 7-3, and Toronto is USDA Zone 5. Canadian agricultural zoning may be different, so you would want to look into that. However, cold hardiness is only one cultural consideration regarding plant suitability for any given site. The best advice I can offer is for you to talk to a local nursery, landscaper or designer.
