I raised three boys. I selected Berber carpet for the family room. It did not show footprints and the multi color threads did not show crumbs or dirt. It wore great! We also had a leather sectional which wore awesome.

Our Berber is 13 years old. Still LOVE it. The most worn area in the Family room now has an area rug over it but my kids are still ten agers and I have no plans to change it for a few years. Even or stairs look pretty good. If you do use Berber on stairs make sure whoever installs it knows about the nap associated with it, that was the only thing that caused a bit of an issue.

Our Berber is almost 15 years old, and in decent shape considering all the times our elder pets have had accidents on it. We're planning on replacing it with solid hardwood simply because we want hardwood, not because it's old and disgusting.

If you like carpet, go for it.
