Shower bench tiling

It's the weekend, and I just visited my bath remodel to find the top tile of the squared shower bench is installed in 2 pieces (see pic) instead of what I would have thought one. My orig tile is 12"x24" , so should be plenty to cover in one piece.
Haven't reached contractor yet, but asking the Houzzer pros.. Is there a mechanical need like for water sloping/run off to have 2 pieces of tiles vs. one? Or, oh-no, is the tiler just a bad one? Thx all.

There no reason a seam should be there if the tiler was working with 12"x 24" material. I've worked with a superior tile man and can honestly tell you (based on the photo) that there are also other seams that shouldn't be there. The small rectangular piece just above the shower bench is one. The side of the shower bench is another. I appears the tiler didn't plan for maximum use of the materials, so he ended up with bad seams. Or, he experienced breakages during cuttings that prevented him from using the measured materials to their best advantage. You need to speak with the contractor.

It looks like at least one dimension of the bench top is greater than 12" so there has to be a seam someplace, no?

It looks as if your tiler has taken the "trouble" to match up the tiles so they follow exactly the lines from floor to ceiling. This is not ill will but it is bad design. I always always supervise tilers and tiling plans because there are so many ways they can go wrong...He should have or could have discussed this with you.

Have you measured the bench width and length. Also, tile advertised as 12x24 is probably 11 3/4" x 23 1/2" true dimension.

Bench may have not been built to tile specifications.

If this is in fact the case, and tile will not cover in one piece, you can find a piece of remnant stone at a local shop. Something complimentary to the tile

Is this a natural stone or man made product. If natural or color-through, the edges should have been polished. The metel cheapens the entire shower design in my opinion.
