Engelmannia peristenia (Engelmann's Daisy)
jekeesl (south-central Arkansas)
This native wildflower is found in the south-central US. It grows to 3 feet tall, with leaves deeply pinnatifid, densely hispid, and up to 12 inches long. The ray flowers curl under during the day (1st photo), and then extend from late-afternoon, through mid-morning the next day (2nd photo). It flowers April-July. According to the online keys for Shinners & Mahler's Illustrated Flora of North Central Texas, farmers call this the "icecream" plant, because it is preferred by livestock. As a result, it is now rarely seen, except along roadsides or other areas inaccessible to grazing animals (J. Stanford, pers. comm.). If you're interested in PDF versions of those Texas wildflower keys, they are available here.
