Guest Picks: Nordic Delights for All Around the Home
Take a style cue from Scandinavia with furnishings and accessories that create a bright, airy feel
It's safe to say that Scandinavian interior design has conquered the world. A plethora of international interiors magazines and websites now feature Nordic-inspired interiors with Scandinavian design classics and that typical Nordic vibe.
But what is it all about? Scandinavian homes pay due attention to a few key factors, the most important being light. In a part of the world that can switch from almost all-day light to almost complete darkness with the seasons, natural light is something to celebrate. But if your home lacks it, create a bright, airy space to mimic the feeling. Opt for natural materials and light, neutral colors — wood, whites, light grays, ceramics — to reflect light and create a feeling of openness, another key factor. Then embellish these with colorful accents for the compulsory color-pop effect.

Unfold Pendant Lamp, Yellow
The Unfold lamp by Danish brand Muuto comes in a variety of colors, but my personal favorite is the bright yellow one. Scandinavians like to decorate with bright neutrals (white, bright grays), and then play with color pops that freshen up the look. This would be an ideal choice for a bright dose of color.
Rest 3-seater Sofa
The Rest sofa by Danish design brand Muuto is on my wish list. It's a fabulous centerpiece for your living room. The simple design and puffy appearance make me want to jump on it immediately. It's an excellent choice for a Scandinavian interior design scheme.
Bloomingville Hängelampe mit Holzperlen
This string light with wooden balls and an exposed bulb is a fantastic eye-catcher for a Nordic-inspired interior design. Hang it in a living room or reading nook, in the middle of the room or along a painted feature wall, and the effect will be fantastic.
'Station' Clock
Simple yet striking, this wall clock by Danish design brand House Doctor is the perfect companion for a Scandinavian-inspired room. It's ideal for living rooms or kitchens.
'Spezialite' Hurricane Lamp/Vase, Small
Simple glass jars are perfect as vases for wildflowers from the garden or your favorite florist. Group them on a table or spread them around the home for a Nordic vibe.
Ish. Collection Blanket
This fabulous blanket with soft color fades plays with a graphic pattern and incorporates orange and copper stripes for pops of color. It's made with a mixture of mohair, merino wool and cotton, which results in a very soft material. It's optimal for Nordic nights at home.
Handwoven Jute Basket
Opt for a handwoven jute basket to de-clutter your space. Store your cushions, blankets, books and magazines in this decorative basket with a real Scandinavian feel.
Kay Bojesen Monkey
Nothing is more iconic and representative of Scandinavian design than the wooden toys by Danish designer Kay Bojesen. These pieces embellish most Scandinavian homes, so don't forget to hang the famous monkey from your shelves!
Aal Low Armchair
This stylish Hay chair in light gray is a fabulous highlight piece for a spacious and light-flooded living room. Use furniture scarcely to create the typical airy Scandinavian feeling.
These String shelves are iconic and optimal for all kinds of interiors because of their modular system. Use them to showcase your favorite collections, books and decorative objects. They also come in various colors and are very typical in Nordic design.
Stool 60, Turquoise/Natural Birch
The Stool 60 by Finnish design brand Artek is another iconic piece. It is a favorite in stylish homes and is a true design piece. It comes in wooden hues, in neutrals and with colorful seat tops. How about some color with this teal version?
Iittala Sarjaton Glass
When you think of Nordic inspiration for your home, don't forget adequate tableware. Finnish design brand Iittala is always a chic choice, and this Sarjaton collection is inspired by Nordic folklore and traditions.
Linen Chambray Towels
Go for raw linen in neutral hues. Slightly crinkled and with a fabulous tactile feel, these towels will underline the Nordic feel of your home. Use them for the bathroom, kitchen or dining room.
Color-bottom Vase
This color-block vase is a beautiful adornment for a Scandinavian-inspired home. Place it in an all-white setting for a pop of color, and either leave it empty or fill it with your favorite blooms. Try yellow flowers to create a Scandinavian color palette.
Eames-style Dar Fiberglass Shell Chair, Arm Shell, Eiffel Base
Nordic-inspired homes do not have to be filled with exclusively Scandinavian design. Try adding midcentury pieces — my favorites are these fiberglass shell chairs in charming pastels.
Luana Vase Set, Blue
This set of Nordic blue vases is a visual delight with the special shape and blue-gray color that recalls ice and clear Scandinavian nights. These would look excellent on a wooden midcentury coffee table or an all-white sideboard.
Teapot, Yellow
This color-dipped porcelain teapot is a great addition to a Nordic home. Home accessories made of natural materials in either neutral hues or saturated colors fit the theme, and color-dipping is also great for Nordic-inspired homes.
Omaggio Vase
Found in almost every photo of Scandinavian-inspired interiors is this Omaggio vase by Danish brand Kähler Design. It comes in various shapes, sizes and colors. The irregularly placed stripes are its signature design.
Bohemia Fragranced Candle
Scandinavian homes pay due attention to a fully sensual home, which includes fragrances as well. For a perfect selection of delightful scents in beautifully simple and stylish canisters, check out the luxe Swedish candles from Byredo.
