Imagine walking outside your home and pulling fresh fruit off the stem. Espalier fruit trees are like having an orchard in your own yard. Plus, in addition to producing delicious fruit, the ornamental shapes have a high wow-factor and require a small footprint. Fruiting espalier trees are available from River Road Farms in a variety of designs. Please call 800-297-1435 or email RIVERRD@USIT.NET for availability.

Grapes are one of the easiest fruits to grow in the NW because they require little interventions. the sweetness can be over 25%. Raisin making is typical for many of our smaller champagne type fruits. With little summer pruning and fertility the grape varieties suitable for the NW number in the dozens. The seedless table grapes are most popular but the wine grape such as Siegerrebe or Madeline Angevine are excellent choices for the home vintner. Photo by Gil Schieber

Hardy Kiwi comes in many varieties. This vine will grow as much as 30 feet but is maintained at 10 feet. Berries keep for 4 to 6 weeks and make excellent fruit leather, jam, wine, juice, but mostly they are excellent fresh out of hand. Bob Glanzman

The gooseberry grows 4 feet high, bears 5 to 7 pounds every year, is as large as grapes and sometimes considered a substitute. It has thorns so one sometimes uses gloves to pick. There are over 1000 varieties and many have disease issues. I have consistently grown excellent fruit without intervention of any sort with the varieties I've come to know. Here we have Lepaan Red a Scotish variety
Quality Design & Construction
We have worked with Dave and Nancy for many years on several areas of their home. I was surprised to learn that they wanted to put a river in their yard. In the beginning I thought they just wanted a small stream. All I can say is WOW!
We started by helping to preserve a kiwi tree that was producing fruit in Apex. I did not realize that kiwi would actually produce fruit in our area.
Then we assisted in the design and construction of the bridge and pergola. We suggested using Rosewood Timbertech and the Timbertech railing system so this would be a low maintenance project for many years to come.
It was truly a pleasure assisting the homeowners with this wonderful project. Dave and I were enjoyed the private garden tour we were given when the gardens officially opened

Elderberry Pearls, an elegant bush, easy and tall. The birds are fond of this fruit if you don't care to make jelly, cordials and wine from this delectable super-berry. It comes highly recommended by alternative doctors for the extremely high antioxidant levels. Flowers are also used for flavoring and tinctures. Some pruning annually but no sprays of any kind required. photo by Gil Schieber, Skipley Farm
