About Us

One Step Ahead, Inc. is owned and operated by two brothers, Bob and Tom Rigg, who have specialized in wood and metal interior staircases in the Puget Sound region for 30 years and counting. Metal exterior railings, gates and fences have also become a big part of our business since 2017. The ability to combine wood and metal on our staircases has attracted many Architects and Designers to our company. Our company is focused on 4 different scopes: New Upper End Construction, including Shop Built Framing Packages, Staircase Upgrades in existing homes, Custom metal Railings, Gates and Fences, and wood Stairpart and Millwork Supply, including flat stock, carvings and turnings. Bob's concentration is in sales, bidding, design and consultation, as well as the occasional on-site installation. Tom handles the purchasing, shop and office management, emailing, and invoicing, as well as the installation of most projects. In addition, we are fortunate to employ a very talented Woodshop Master to handle all the manufacturing necessary, in our 1800 square foot woodshop space, and a very talented metal fabricator in our 800 square foot metal shop, located in Bothell, Washington.

After the recent purchase of our home, we worked with Bob Rigg and One Step Ahead to upgrade our primary interior staircase with period details to better reflect the 1912 construction date of the house. The transformation was nothing short of spectacular. Bob is a seasoned craftsman with demonstrated experience and knowledge of this niche industry. Of importance to us was his understanding of the construction methodologies and challenges inherent in working with older homes. Bob provided important insight and advice during the design process and continued to keep us involved during construction with prompt communication. With great care, precision and skill, Bob and Brandon executed an important design improvement to our home that now features a beautiful hardwood staircase complete with a craftsman style newel post and balustrade. Beyond the aesthetic updates, the structural improvements they made have ensured the staircase will last another 100 years or more. We couldn't be happier with the result and highly recommend working with One Step Ahead. From start to finish, they were exceptional. Thank you Bob and Brandon for bringing your talent and expertise to our home!
