Eve's Garden Design

It has been just one year since our garden was installed and we are so very happy with it! We removed a traditional lawn and with Eve's guidance have a gorgeous native plant-filled habitat. It is truly more than we had hoped for! Instead of fighting the end of the day harsh Chico sun the plants chosen thrive on it. I really can't recommend Eve highly enough. We are fairly educated gardeners, but Eve's knowledge is deep. She listened to us always and sought to really understand our goals visually and structurally. She is not afraid to share her opinions, offered us many choices, was flexible and very reliable. We so appreciated her guidance/ Her plans were beautiful. She worked well with our contractor. And above all: the garden is magnificent and gives us joy daily. The plants selected are thriving. The sustainable components of the design are working perfectly. I engaged Eve to help me recreate a natural environment on a five-acre plot of land, basically pasture, which I had purchased for my retirement home. I had definite ideas, which she respected: I envisioned a native oak savanna, with certain areas of non-native plants per my personal interests. We worked in three stages because of the large property, and she was always attentive to my wishes, while making her suggestions. She was so patient. She made it clear that she was there to help me realize my vision. This was intended to be a conservation project, attracting all manner of fauna: birds, insects, . . . Eve was so knowledgeable regarding native flora, and taught me much. I highly recommend her, and look forward to the development of this project.

Eve transformed our sunbaked lawn into a beautiful drought tolerant garden. Eve was wonderful to work with. With our input regarding aesthetics and maintenance, she developed a detailed and easy to follow plan that included a lovely array of native and drought tolerant plants. During 2020, we purchased a new home in Chico that required a total backyard makeover: plants, trees, and a new irrigation system. We specified that the plants and trees be native and drought tolerant. Eve spent consultation time with us on a regular basis before submitting a completed design for our backyard garden. We bought our modest home in 2011 and the first thing we did was tear out our water thirsty back lawn. For a few years we ambitiously grew vegetables and flowers, but a bad load of compost brought in Johnson grass that took over the vegetable garden and killed our enthusiasm. We also took out the lawn in the front yard and followed a landscape plan with California natives, but executed it ourselves and did a poor job. Both front and back yards were a mess. We sought out a landscape architect with a focus on California natives and low water gardens. We found Eve online and, after our first meeting, we chose to work with her without consulting anyone else. During that first consultation Eve sat down with us (outside on our patio and all of us masked in keeping with Covid protocols) and asked question after question about our lifestyle, our vision for the front and back gardens, and how we wanted to use our space. Multiple meetings followed, with Eve bringing loads of ideas and suggestions, and drawing plans as we watched her sketch. When the design phase came to plant choices, Eve gave us lists of suitable plants based our needs, which we were able to research and narrow down to our favorites. Eve was also able to recommend a local landscaper to build our garden to her plans and he was fantastic. Our gardens went in last fall and are growing beautifully. We have enjoyed working with Eve and our gardens have surpassed our expectations.

We worked with Eve Werner on our landscaping project and she helped us with the planning of both our hardscape and the plants for our garden through all stages, from design to plant selection to planting supervision. Eve was very thorough in first getting our ideas of what we envisioned in our garden and then designing everything in meticulous detail. She gave us many options of suitable plants to choose from. She also gave us great advice on the timing of getting our garden started. Our garden was choked with privet and bermuda grass. Eve advised us to first solarize and then sheet mulch the entire garden area in order to get rid of as much of the bermuda grass as possible before putting in our new plants. It required some patience (waiting for several months for the sheet mulching to work), but it was worth it and was much preferable to using chemicals to kill the bermuda grass. We now have a garden full of beautiful drought-resistant plants. Our house also had a very 50’s-looking patio, with cracked concrete and swirly metal supports for the shade overhang. Eve designed the new patio with an updated look that fit perfectly with the simple clean lines of our 50’s style house. It looks awesome! All along this whole process, Eve was always available to answer any and all questions we had along the way. In addition to all her knowledge, Eve is a pleasure to work with because she is just such a wonderful person! We whole-heartedly recommend Eve for any landscaping project.

Eve Werner is absolutely fantastic: kind, responsive, talented, and efficient. We met about my backyard garden design and began with a thorough needs analysis. She helped me design a landscape that was exactly what I wanted: drought tolerant, modern, full of grasses, and sages, and pollinator attractive. We chose Eve to design our pollinator garden, and we are so glad we did! Eve brought a background in fine arts, as well as an in depth knowledge of native plants to our project. She designed a garden with an arched entrance, curving paths, bird baths, benches, and a circular patio. She installed 258 plants selected for attracting pollinators and drought tolerance. Eve set the yard up on a multi-valve drip system. From early spring to late fall, sages, salvias, and native grasses turn our front yard into a wonderland of color, shape, and texture, designed to attract butterflies and bees of all kinds. The hummingbirds, finches, and sparrows balance out the kaleidoscope of movement and color. Thanks to Eve, we have the garden of our dreams!

Eve designed an excellent backyard bird and bee friendly, low water, native plant garden for me. I wanted plants that provided sustenance for critters all year long and she worked that into the design as well. She began by using a sun tracker app to insure plants got the right amount of sun and shade throughout the year. She provides a large, professionally printed landscape map with every plant represented and labeled along with its pruning and maintenance instructions. She is thorough, responds quickly by email to questions and requests, and will help you purchase plants at her cost. my garden area looks great.

We had a wonderful experience working with Eve. At our first meeting, we did not have a specific vision for our front yard. We are first time homeowners, and we had little knowledge of landscaping and which types of plants to use in our climate. Throughout the process, Eve helped us choose drought tolerant plants that match our aesthetic, and she created a front yard plan that suits our taste and our home. We really love the artistic design, the color palette, cohesive elements to tie the yard in with our surrounding environment. Eve also gave us useful advice for setting up our drip system, planting, and sheet mulching, as we were on a budget and doing the labor ourselves. We are excited to watch everything grow!

Eve is one of the best professionals I have worked with. This project entailed a complete redesign of almost one acre of neglected and very very old landscaping, including hard scape, irrigation, landscape, lighting, and water features. The home is a restored mid-century modern and truly the landscape that Eve worked with us to develop is in beautiful harmony with the home and the over-all environment. I found Eve to be very patient, thoughtful, creative, and knowledgeable. She listens to a persons desires for the landscaping, takes into account lifestyle and personal style, and is willing to work along any type of timeline that is needed to develop the creative and underlying foundation. Additionally Eve was able to work very harmoniously with the installer and his crew with whom we have a long-term relationship. Eve was the best. Her landscape design for our front yard was exactly what I wanted. She is great in the design of drought-tolerant landscapes, making imaginative use of native California plants. She also oversaw the project and was very exacting with the contractors to ensure that the design came true!
