In old China, woven lunch boxes such as this were essential day-to-day items for every Chinese household. The baskets served as a means of organizing and transporting freshly cooked foods to rice fields or work sites. The multi-tier design allows for the organization of different varieties of dishes.
This basket features three circular tiers, crafted by ornamental wickering techniques. The basket's lid is decorated with the Chinese character "Fu", meaning luck. Intricate carvings ornates the basket's handle, while matching brass hardware and plates complete its overall design. With all of its components preserved, this basket still retains its functionality. It can serve as a decorative piece on its own or as a deposit for small everyday items.
