These remarkable flat-weave Kilims are impeccably constructed from hand-woven wool Kilim panels, handmade by the women of the nomadic tribes that populated the mountainous northern region of Persia. They were used for mats, blankets, wall décor, insulation for the home and some were included in dowries. A fine example of minimalism, these vintage flat-weave carpets embody the modern concept of less is more. The simplistic style combined with its understated color palette produces a mesmerizing optical effect over the entire composition. Kilims are the essence of variety: Eternal and patterned yet somehow modest and unobtrusive. Beautiful over concrete, wood and marble floors, Kilim rugs are impervious to trends. The relaxed palette and flat-woven style complement concrete and brick walls for a more Industrial aesthetic.
Kilims are flat-woven carpets or rugs produced from around the world, mostly in Turkey (Anatolia and Thrace), North Africa, Scandinavia, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia and China. Kilims can be purely decorative or can function as prayer rugs. They are handmade by tightly interweaving the warp and weft strands of the weave to produce a flat surface with no pile. The weft strands, which carry the visible design and color, are almost always wool, while the hidden warp strands can be either wool or cotton. The warp strands are only seen at the ends, where they appear as the fringe and usually tied in bunches, to ensure unraveling of the weave. Making a Kilim rug is highly regarded Folk Art and there is a great deal of symbolism in the designs. Kilim symbols may vary according to their changes of color, placement in the pattern or slight modification of shape. With multiple patterns, motifs, colors and sizes available, Kilim rugs can fit practically any style of design, be it classical, traditional, contemporary, Bohemian chic, modern or rustic. Kilim rugs are used as floor coverings, wall-hangings, bedspreads or as pillow covers, to name just a few of their uses. Today, Kilims are not only found in the home, but also in offices where they take the edge off the usual formality. Flatweave Kilim Rug.

What are the best rug materials for high traffic areas?
For high-traffic areas, durability is key. Consider these rug materials known for their resilience:
- Wool: Naturally durable, wool rugs handle foot traffic well, resist stains, and maintain their appearance over time. They’re also good at hiding dirt.
- Polypropylene: A synthetic material, polypropylene, is stain-resistant, easy to clean, and stands up well to heavy use.
- Polyester: While not as durable as nylon, polyester rugs are stain-resistant, budget-friendly, and offer a soft feel, making them a good choice for moderate traffic areas.
