James was supposed to complete a concrete column foundation drawing per my criteria. The drawings he provided were all wrong. When I confronted Jame he got angry and rude. I asked for 12 inch columns and was provided a drawing for 18 inch columns for the corners and 16 inch columns for the rest. His reasoning was the concrete to beam conection needs to be doubled for uplift. I have contacted a structural engineer that states 12 inch columns are more than enough and the concrete to wood conection dose not need to be double. I asked for the uplift calculations and Jame again became confrontational and said he quit. I asked Mr. Furkis for a refund and he said no. I'm a disabled VET and see no integrity with what Mr. Furkis has done. First it was 400 for the foundation plans A FLAT FEE. When they were wrong he wanted 200 more the week before Christmas to fix them. Their are connections that will fit what I described. Simpson strong tie had their ENGINEER send over options for 12 inch columns. James didn't aprove or never cared to look.

I worked hard to come up with a quality solution for the client on this project. I put extra time in this project even after giving a discount due to the circumstances. It is not the responsibility of Myslelf as a Registered Architect in the State of Michigan to draft details as specified by the owner. It is the responsibility of the Design Professional to work with the owner to develop and approve a design that protects the health, safety, and welfare of the public and meets all applicable laws. As the Design Professional, I studied the specifications and calculated them to be not in compliance with the Michigan Residential Code and made all accommodations to come up with an alternate solution acceptable to the owner. Furthermore, drawings were approved by the owner and completed for all foundation details as requested. Furthermore the Architect offered to work with a Structural Engineer licensed in the State of Michigan for review and the owner declined, but instead wanted to act as a middleman between an unnamed and unverified structural engineer, the Architect being unsure as to whether they were even Licensed in the State of Michigan. As with any project, I will do as much as I can to come up with a quality project, but I will not violate the law to do so. As a clarification, The project amount stated by the client may be construction cost, but the actual fees for said details were under $500.

Jim looked at the sketches we had made and listened to our ideas, wants, and dreams. At our next meeting, he showed us architectural drawings of what we said that we wanted. He then showed us several alternative drawings of what it was that we really wanted! He was excellent at really listening to what we were saying and then putting it into our house plans. In subsequent meetings, he kept on fine tuning the plans by really listening to what it was that we said we wanted or even dreamed of having. Thanks to Jim, we now have an awesome architectural plan for our house. Jim gave us an estimate of his fee and the actual cost was very close.

We met Mr. Furkis through a craigslist ad where he offered his design services. In brief, we were looking for someone that could redesign our 2nd floor and 1st floor kitchen so that appropriate construction bids and permits could be obtained, and materials cost could be estimated. Mr. Furkis was great. The work performed was of high quality and timely. He was patient with our design needs and was available if we had questions or concerns. We are extremely satisfied to have taken this path (having plans drawn first) because this has made the remodeling project very straight forward and manageable. We will definitely consider his firm for our future remodeling needs.

Jim came up with a concept to fix a problem we had at our house. It had been cobbled together over the years and added onto numerous times. There were 4 ridge lines that were all different heights and latitudes. They were also all different pitches. His idea eliminated two of them and added a very nice look to the old house. We also gained a nice covered porch area. Jim also provided us with a number of different elevation views of the house with various treatment and siding options. It helped make the two story area of our house go from the look of it being added on to, as an afterthought, to being part of the plan, from the beginning.
