About Us

Matthew T. Hansen Architect is a registered firm established in 1996 by its principle Matt Hansen Architect AIBC. Since that time, it has operated as a sole proprietorship, giving personal attention to every phase of the projects it undertakes. Matt graduated from the University of Idaho in 1989 earning a Bachelor degree in Architecture. His internship in Vancouver was under the careful guidance of Architect Loy Leyland, and Matt became registered to practice architecture in 1995. Over the last 20 years, the firm has specialized in single-family residential design. Most projects undertaken are situated on Vancouver’s North Shore, and the design emphasis is practical, functional architecture. The firm as been honoured by both the District and City of North Vancouver with Design Awards of Excellence for ‘exceptional architecture’. Matt has spent most of his life on the North Shore, growing up in West Vancouver. Happily married for 25 years, he is an active father of two adult children. He has been a member of various community panels and committees over the years with a keen interest in the future development of our community. Matthew T. Hansen Architect has developed a strong reputation for providing excellence in service and client satisfaction. We hired Matt to do a reno on an old rancher that we had just purchased. Our goal was to have an "aging in place" home that would also fit the needs of frequent house guests and entertaining large numbers. Matt took great care in listening to our needs, and coming up with solutions and plans that were just right for us. When obstacles arose, they would always be presented along with the solution. He was always available to talk with us and worked very well with our contractor, Schultz Construction. He is creative, a pleasure to work with and we would highly recommend his services.

Our experience working with Matt was first class throughout. Matt was very organized and prepared for his first meeting with us. He listened attentively, seeking to understand our wishes and motivations for the changes we were hoping to see in our home. He asked insightful questions, and did not hesitate to make suggestions that were 100% pertinent and practical. Matt's vision helped us maximize our useable space, natural light and our views. Matt worked closely with our contractor and communicated regularly with us about any changes. His experience regarding the local building codes and permits helped us set realistic expectations for the scope and timing of this project. His fee structure was presented in a very upfront and clear manner, and we consider the investment we made in his services critical to the success of our renovation. We love our new home, and we loved working with Matt.

I contacted 2 other architects, and 3 home designers ( all 5 were recommended), when I began the process of designing a new residence. Only 1 architect returned my query. All 3 home designers were disorganized, failed to keep their promised, and had me doing much of their work. The architect couldnt accommodate my time line, but at least he responded. Frustrated, I happened to mention this to my North Van Realtor, Dave Watt; he urged me to contact Matt. WOW! Matt was 1st class, he replied the same day to my email request, met with me 3 days later, listened to me, added his professional thoughts, and within the promised time delivered sketches that were incredibly close to what I wanted. Hired Matt, the experience from start to finish resulted in me recommending him to a builder friend and 2 other friends. By the way Matt is well-respected at all North Shore municipal halls and with many good builders and trades, and he will even negotiate with your neighbours on trees, construction access and other matters. Even my neighbours enjoyed working with him!

Matt is an excellent architect! My husband and I recently completed a renovation on our 1923 Craftsman Bungalow in North Vancouver. Matt came up with the perfect floor plan for our family that retained the heritage style we fell in love with. Our renovation included a brand new top floor & staircase that kept almost the exact footprint of the old top floor but ceilings that were now liveable, an additional bathroom and new staircase in true craftsman style. Our renovation recently was awarded the 2016 District of North Vancouver Heritage Award and it wouldn't have been possible without Matt.

Commented: What is that top design called? Under the peak?No specific name. Just a custom designed gable end detail. It has no Structural purpose. Decorative only. Designed to give the home it's own unique appearance.
