I knew about Durston Saylor before we met. I knew him as celebrated photographer of architecture and interiors. His work was the best I had ever seen. His photographs graced the pages of Architectural Digest Magazine for over a decade. I was thrilled when AD sent Durston to photograph a residence in Manhattan that I designed and was then published in the magazine. Durston's photos were beautiful and he was a pleasure to work with. I was doubly fortunate that Architectural Digest sent Durston to Hawaii to photograph my home there for "Designers own Homes" issue. HIs photographs were enchanting and he captured the home perfectly. The magazine spread was stunning.
Durston and I have become good friends over the years. Now, I have come to know his Artwork. There are two sides of Durston Saylor, the brilliant design photographer and the Artist. He is a fine art photographer in his alter ego and now I am including his works in homes I design.
Of course we all know that photographic technology has changed over the last decade. All I can say is that current technology for design photography often can render soulless results. It takes an artist and one who is "classically" trained as a photographer of interior design and decoration to capture the soul and feeling of a place. Durston takes current technology and a breadth of experience that no other photographer exceeds to accomplish just this.
