Maury Hurt was a pleasure to work with in the designing and building of our mountain home. His enthusiasm and expertise for our project was wonderful. Hurt Architecture designed a three story addition to our home that included a four season room, a cupola with a 20 foot circular stairway, a wine tasting room and a walk in wine cellar. Maury's vision was nothing short of spectacular. Others had given me suggestions as to how to make this all work, but he was the one who was able to vision what the final product would look like. He managed to make the addition look as if it was always there. It matched the original structure perfectly. Maury listened to us and always was able to use our suggestions-yet modifying them as only a skilled architect can do. The final product is better than we could have imagined. It is the talk of the neighborhood and won the 2013 NC builders award for best addition. We selected Maury Hurt / Hurt Architecture & Planning to design our home at the Mountain Air Country Club in Burnsville, NC because we KNEW we could trust him to create a livable, comfortable and artistically beautiful home design for our growing family and guests. He is a wonderful listener who can transform spoken ideas into visual designs without the extended challenges back and forth between the owner and architect that are too often the norm. His knowledge of interior spatial design layout / flow; room sizes; ceiling heights; captured window views and finishes are superb and particularly blended well with the efficient placement and use of the desired electrical, HVAC and plumbing systems throughout our home. We have really appreciated accepting all of his suggestions for long term energy savings such as specific window brands; both interior and exterior insulation types; propane heating and tank-less water heaters, which are absolutely the best. His exterior design use of combined wood, stone and cedar shake with prairie columns; sloped roof designs and slight driveway gradient exceeded our expectations for achieving a mountain home / cottage design at a cost point that we expected. We covet the time we spend on both our front and rear porches which are great extensions of our home's attractive livability. In summary, we are the beneficiaries of a beautiful, highly efficient, warm and friendly home that has and continues to capture our and our guest.s gratefulness for choosing Maury Hurt as our architect. The design of the house is truly wonderful. Everyone who visits is effusive with praise. The house articulates perfectly with the site and the interior spaces flow into each other and are highly livable. We greatly appreciate Maury Hurt's attention to detail and his ability to work us through the many design details and trade-offs we had to consider. The installation of an observatory dome on the house presented unique challenges which he addressed with ease and professionalism. When planning to build a retirement home in the mountains of North Carolina, my wife and I found properties that appeared to represent the style and character that we liked and found that several of them had been designed by Maury Hurt. Upon interviewing Maury, he asked all the right questions regarding our wants and needs and asked that we collect information (pictures, floorpans and such) that represented what we liked and what would suit our needs. After delivering that information, we received a rough draft of a layout, that took account of the difficulty of our lot, and it was close to our dream house. We provided further input and Maury's firm made adjustments to address our comments. Maury and staff were consistently creative, responsive and through. They worked closely with our builder during construction and the result is a home that we are thrilled to own. This is the only experience in our lifetime - regarding the building of a home - that was a pleasant adventure. We worked with Maury Hurt of Hurt Architecture to convert a 1929 flat roof spanish style stucco home into an arts and craft style home consistent with the homes in the neighborhood where we live. Maury exceeded every expectation in the area of planning, consulting with the contractor, and keeping us informed of any and all issues that arose during the 9 month renovation process.
