We had Mathis Custom Remodeling renovate our entire home including a room and bathroom addition. The transformation of our home was amazing. We really enjoyed working with Phil and Raelene Mathis on this project. They really helped us through each step of the process as this was our first remodel project. Mathis Custom Remodeling did a beautiful job updating my old (1963) home. Raelene and Phil are very professional and great to work with. I certainly will call upon them for any future projects I may have. The cost was also very reasonable, everything well done and finished on time. I had known Phillip and Raelene first from church many years ago. I had them do a bathroom remodel on my house at the time. I later turned that house into a rental. Last year I had a pipe burst under house. The dry out and mold removal process took out master bath, carpet, drywall/plaster etc. The insurance company had list of people all of whom seemed to be overlooking what I thought should be done. I called Phillip and I am so glad I did. He worked his magic along with some great subcontractors some who I've used after the insurance project was done. I can't say enough good things about Phillip and Raelene. Phillip went above and beyond like I knew he would from previous work he did for me. Raelene kept me informed on scheduling and billing. What a great team!

Phil and Raelene were GREAT to work with. We purchased a family home that had not been remodeled since the early 90s and we needed to make it functional for our small family. Raelene was always super responsive via email to help us resolve issues that popped up and Phil was such a joy to have over. They were completely professional and when we encountered a hurdle, they were quick to give us options and how to get back on track. You always hear horror stories about contractors ripping people off and we were nervous about hiring our first contractors, but I feel 100% we made the right decision.

Phil and a Raelene Mathis recently completed a full home remodel for me of my 1,700 square foot townhome. We gutted the kitchen and both bathrooms, and flooring through out. We did all new custom cabinets in baths and kitchen, new counters, new flooring throughout unit, new plumbing fixtures, took out a wall, paint throughout. While there were some delays due to Covid, anytime an issue came up Raelene and Phil jumped on it immediately to handle. All of their subcontractors did amazing work. I am very impressed with the quality of work. Their prices were fair. I am so happy with my new home! It was built in the 60’s but everything is new and fresh now. I would not hesitate to recommend them and would absolutely use them again!

My wife and I recently renovated a condo we purchased in Pacific Beach. It was challenging since our primary home is 2000 miles away, our travel was limited by the pandemic and the condo required a complete remodel. Phil and Raelene were great, the workmanship was very good and Raelene was able to coordinate the entire project through zoom calls. It was particularly helpful in our decision making process that Raelene has a design certification. Bottom line - we are very satisfied.

Remodeling is never easy, but Phil and Raelene did their best to make it as smooth as possible while honoring all of our "asks" - even those that were outside of the scope of work - with patience and kindness. This was a big undertaking and we had five bids. We settled on Mathis Custom Remodeling because we felt they really "listened" to what we wanted and then brought their expertise to bear throughout the project. I am no trained chef, but cooking is my passion, and our 20 year old kitchen had seen better days with as much time as I spend in it. Every time I come out to greet the morning and get a cup of coffee I have to pinch myself. I DO really get to cook here! Phil and Raelene gave us a timeline and stuck to it. We added out of scope work, and they still brought our project in on budget and on time. Our home was built sometime around 1920 and was in need of a professional kitchen remodel. Since there was no option to enlarge the kitchen space, we presented Phil and Raelene Mathis with the challenge of maximizing the use of the existing space, while maintaining the spirit and unique features of our vintage home. The galley layout was set, but cabinets, counters, appliances, plumbing, lighting, and flooring all needed to be replaced. In addition, structural work was needed to strengthen the floor and enlarge the laundry space. We knew going into the project what materials we wanted to be used. Raelene, as the interior designer, validated our choices and worked diligently to source them. When we needed her input, she was ready to provide it, but willingly stepped back to let us make our selections. Phil and Raelene allowed us to be as involved as we wanted to be and to help brain-storm solutions for the multiple issues that cropped up because of the age of the house and the space restrictions. Throughout the duration of the project we could count on their dependability, perseverance, and attention to detail. Without hesitation, we are happy to recommend Mathis Custom Remodeling.

We chose Mathis to remodel the home we recently purchased, focusing on a complete overhaul of the kitchen and all baths. They did a fantastic job, have a great crew of subcontractors that do a great job at finishing the work, and not making such a mess while doing the project. Raelene and Phil are always accessible and approachable, especially when we had to make changes along the way. They took our ideas, blended with their expertise in executing, and we came up with a fantastic 'new' home that we will enjoy for a long time. One important thing....they really care about doing the job right, especially the things that don't show. Phil always is thorough in developing the correct build quality of the structure, plumbing and electric, not just the finishes, which are first class as well. Would we hire them again? Absolutely! Phil and Raelene Mathis did a fantastic job transforming our cramped master bathroom/closet area into a separate master bathroom and walk in-closet. The work involved removing and relocating all plumbing, electrical, walls and doors, creating a separate area for the walk-in closet, and designing a master bathroom that was elegant and functional. Both Phil and Raelene were personally involved during the entire project: Phil either supervising or performing the work; and Raelene helping with material selection and overseeing the work schedule. The finished product truly exceeded our expectations.

I found Phil and Raelene Mathis on Houzz actually when I mistakenly clicked a box when a window opened. Then it said I could request an estimate. I figured why not? The first test is do they show up on time when they say Trust me in Calif THIS IS the first bar (!) As my last two companies I hired for other jobs were NOT a good experiences (JaCor for my kitchen (never again) and a nice but ineffective GC from Craigslist for my 2nd bath who I thoroughly vetted) - both disappointing for different reasons. Well Mathis were fantastic! They showed up on time, together to meet me, viewed my Master Bedroom and bathroom and discussed my project and ideas. I liked watching how they interacted with each other (spouses) -THIS told me a lot -that they had respect for one another and listened to each other. Raelene has a great design sense so Phil would let her go off with her creative ideas (sweet) and then he would jump in with the "technical elements" so I could understand all that would be involved. :) I told them I also wanted to paint the entire upstairs of my condo and remove all the carpet & replace it with new flooring. Let's be honest the process is a grind - so what do you want when you hire someone for your project? Well I wanted someone I could trust, who doesn't cut corners, and who respects my home. The Mathis' were ALL these and more. Phil did a few extras for me and even a year later, when my wall heater (Phil's suggestion and I LOVE it as I hate being cold in the mornings in winter) had a recall, Phil came out and removed the heater so I could ship it back and then he reinstalled the replacement one! Who does that in Calif?! It's usually "the job is finished and I'm on to the next one & have no time for you now" from most companies. I would totally use the Mathis' again for any project and I really wish I knew them for my prior remodels (kitchen and hall bath). By the way, their Tiler is incredible and did an impeccable job on my shower with his scroll cutting and matching my surround. AND he was SO tidy, he created a mini studio in my garage(!) to do his sawing, to contain the dust!) I HIGHLY recommend this wonderful team.

Phil did an amazing job - he was always here when he said he'd be, and was available by phone when we had questions (during a health department inspection). This was work he was donating - but he treated us like we were any other customer. No corners cut - no delays for "more important" jobs.… Description of work: We needed to have a hot water heater installed in a bathroom at our office - and have another bathroom remodeled to be handicap accessible.

Raelene and Phil Mathis of Mathis Custom Remodeling are kind and ethical people. This is an important point to make in the world of contractors. I simply did not have the time to pick all the colors, materials, patterns, etc. I told Raelene what I wanted and said, "Make it happen." And that she did! I highly recommend their work. They are punctual, energetic, and come full of great ideas to make your bathroom remodel dreams a reality. They are conscientious and methodical with their work. Additionally, they went above and beyond by resealing a portion of my kitchen floor that was driving me nuts and could have potentially become an issue in the near future...complimentary! They have also helped me with other small issues around my house...replaced laundry room sink, redid my drawers to accommodate my new shutters, and fixed my electrical system in my bathroom after I accidentally blew it out...I need to retake home ec class:-)! In 2017, I had two bathrooms remodeled and then did a major kitchen remodel, which extended to installation of new flooring for my whole house. Presently, I'm planning a remodel of my master bath. From initial concept to last detail, Raelene and Phil Mathis have been always accessible and more than ready to explore the best and most economical way to bring concept to reality. In every instance, the subcontractors they have chosen to carry out the work have been thoroughly professional and expert in their various skills. With Mathis Custom Remodeling I have complete confidence in a superb outcome!

After research and gathering information online as well as attending home improvement exhibitions, we invited 3 contractors to visit our home and to give us their recommendations. We selected Phil and Raelene Mathis of Mathis Custom Remodeling because we felt comfortable with their recommendations and their cost estimate was within our budget. Our kitchen remodeling project is a relatively small project in terms of size and budget, but has all the required tasks of a larger project. It includes the removal of some exterior walls for a small addition as well as a portion of an interior bearing wall. Project schedule from demolition to cabinet installation was estimated for completion in 13 weeks with no guarantee on this estimate. We felt comfortable with Phil's explanation that a contractor would profit more if he could complete the job earlier than estimated. Building plans were completed by a professional building designer and served as part of the contract and the basis for the project cost estimate and schedule. We paid for the building plans and its permit processing separately from the contract project cost. Our project did not have a very good start. Right after the demolition it appeared that there would be problems with framing and plumbing. The existing second floor joints did not run in the direction as drafted and 2 drain pipes might have to route differently plan planned. These 2 problems caused us costly change orders and delayed the project for several weeks. In addition to these problems, while jack hammering to expose a pipe in the concrete slab, an explosion occurred where a plumber was working. Unknown to any of us in our neighborhood, our subdivision was built on post-tension slab. Fortunately, this accident did not hurt the plumber but added another cost to our project and 1-2 weeks to the schedule. Our project was completed with approximately 15% over budget and 2 months more than scheduled. Throughout the entire project we were able to communicate with Phil and Raelene without any problems. Not that we were happy with the change orders or schedule delays, but Phil and Raelene were always professional, patient, gracious and responsive to our requests. We are satisfied with the quality of works from Phil and all of his subcontractors except one - the bookshelf sub. We still marvel at our new kitchen today and have already forgotten the long months of cooking and eating in the garage. We would like to thank Phil and Raelene for helping us with a wonderful kitchen that we will enjoy for many years to come. We would not hesitate to recommend this professional husband & wife team to anyone who needs help to build his dream project.

Highly recommend!!!!! Mathis Custom remodeling did a full remodeling job of my late father's house in San Diego. I was initially hesitant as I live in New York and would not be able to oversee the project directly. Raelene and her husband Phil were exceptionally professional, attentive to detail, and treated my house as if it was their own. They had wonderful suggestions for updating my 1962 ranch style house to modern standards while still incorporating much of the house's original charm. Their communication with me was excellent, with weekly reports and photos, as well as promptly responding to all my questions and concerns. They respected my budget and my taste while offering many suggestions for small improvements that made a huge difference. Everyone who has seen the house comments that it's like a brand new house. Complete Jack and Jill bathroom remodel inc complete demo down to studs, taking down a wall, moving plumbing, converting shower to new bathtub, new toilet, electrical, dry wall, tile, installing an exterior window, new custom vanity, lighting. Phil and Raelene did an excellent job overall. Phil is very detail oriented and did most of the work himself, and this is why I chose Mathis Custom Remodeling over one of the "big guys". Phil subcontracted the electrical, drywall, cabinets, and tile, but oversaw everything. As issues arose, they were quick to find solutions. We couldn't be happier with the final product. Phil was very pleasant to interact with, and very considerate about keeping our house as clean as possible. The subs were equally respectful. My wife was pregnant during the construction with a difficult pregnancy, and Phil did a great job managing her "pregnancy emotions/hormones" during the project. Every little issue seemed to bother my wife to no end, but the end result is great, and we are very happy... Esp now since the baby is born. :) There were several unforeseen delays due to us changing the tile choice and cabinet choice, and things could have been done more efficiently if we had a detailed design and product choice at the beginning. If you choose to use Phil and Raelene, I'd recommend working out every detail before getting started. Then the project will be done more quickly. Since they are a husband and wife team, they do not have the same resources as the "big guys" but their price is much more fair and about 2/3rds what we were quoted by the "big guys". Again, we are very happy with the final product, and we would recommend Mathis Custom Remodeling highly if you are looking for detail-oriented perfectionism by a true craftsman at a fair price.

Mathis Custom Remodeling provided design plans and made suggestions consistent with our needs. We had our kitchen renovation handled professionally from start to finish. Specific remodel plans were prepared, including relocating the refrigerator and creating a much needed coffee bar. All materials were selected by the team's designer including paint, tile, counter tops and new lighting. The job turned out great. There were no delays in the process that were caused by the contractor. They were extremely neat and clean and allowed us the maximum possible usage of our kitchen during construction. I wish I had known about Mathis Custom Remodeling for our previous remodeling projects.

Accurate quote, reasonable and on time. Very no hassle, especially after the remodeling horror stories we've heard (and sort of expected) but we had none of that. I wish some back and forth communication was a little quicker for a response at times but that's a minor issue considering the scope of the kitchen remodel (with full demo) we had done. Good work.

This was a bathroom remodel in a 60 year old block home on the southeast side of Mt Helix. We knew from the beginning that nothing in this project was going to be easy. Phil and Raelene Mathis proved to be a great fit for this project. Phil gave us the most realistic and complete estimate of all the many contractors we contacted. There were some very hard problems that Phil had to deal with but he not only finished right on time but within budget. Phil was a very easy person to work with and all of his subcontractors were great also, they were all just as likeable as Phil and Raelene. The bathroom was spectacular when finished. We came into this project with our own ideas, our own plans, and our own selection of materials. This is sometimes not a good situation for the contractor, but Mathis was very understanding and cooperative and readily embraced our project goals. The project involved removal of the existing tub, replacing it with a shower and; removal of the existing shower, replacing it with a closet. During one of the planning meetings, Phil and Raeline suggested that the closet be finished off with a pocket door. The result was we ended up with a spacious walk in closet with full tile floor, baseboards and Phil's custom made shelving all showcased with a pocket door with full length glass. Very impressive. During the project we were allowed to work closely with the crew, offering opinions and making suggestions, and being involved in such things as tile design and materials purchases. This interaction was readily accepted and we were especially impressed by the excellent results given us by the tile crew led by Adam. He is a true perfectionist who analyzed our suggestions and worked them into his own professional ideas to give us a master bath which will definitely enjoy, but will enhance the value of our home. The contractor insists on minimizing the disruption of your household while they are working; control the dust and other usual construction drawbacks; and exercises thorough clean up practices on a daily basis to allow you to live in somewhat normal conditions when they are not working. We will definitely recommend Mathis to anyone !

We recently contracted with Mathis remodel to restore and upgrade the main bathroom in our historical home. The results are nothing short of extraordinary! From the studs out custom fitting of new period fixtures, exquisite detailed tiling, to the new shower and custom cabinetry. The work featured keen attention to detail, thoughtful design and quality touches throughout. Mathis Custom Remodeling was recommended to me by my daughter. She had a very good result when she hired Phil Mathis to remodel her shower. We hired him to remodel both of our very small bathrooms as well as replace interior doors, etc. Our home was built in 1958 and was last remodeled about 25 years ago. I recently purchased a home and needed a complete shower replacement of an old roman bath that barely operated. Since my shower was not a standard replacement, I knew I was going to need some custom work. I contacted Mathis Custom Remodeling due to their extremely high ratings on yelp. This was my first experience with remodeling and I was pleasantly surprised how personable and responsive Phil and his team were. Pretty soon into the process I learned that Phil's knowledge and expertise expanded way beyond the original remodeling project and I ended up hiring him for several more projects in my house. I was so extremely elated at the final result of my new shower. It is truly a work of art. I highly recommend Phil and his team to do any custom remodelling. Phil Mathis replaced my shower in my guest bathroom. He did a great job, and I love the finished look. He took great care during the remodeling to protect the hardwood floors and keep things clean throughout the project. He was considerate, professional and I would use him again for future jobs.

Review of Mathis Custom Remodeling: We contracted with Phil Mathis in August, 2004 to completely remodel our master bath. The price was competitive and the workmanship was excellent. We selected Phil to remodel our second bath in November, 2006 - a major undertaking. Good price and another excellent job! Just recently (January, 2013), we had Phil modernize our living room, dining room, hallway and entryway. Not only does Phil do excellent work, he has also provided us with design ideas and advice.
