I did not walk off the job nor destroy his floors. Initially, the client chose a mix of Jacobean and Ebony, Minwax, when I applied the polyurethane, he felt the color was too brown. The initial sample did not have any urethane so the golden tint of Lenmar Polyurethane when applied made the color too brown for the customer's liking. I willingly resanded the floors and reapplied the stain, straight Jacobean in 3 different spots with a different polyurethane, Duraseal which had less of a golden tint. The client was satisfied with the samples. I explained the characteristics of the polyurethane and what to expect when applied in different lighting and natural shades of the wood but the customer apparently didn't understand and went on the internet to refute what his understanding was of my explanations. I did suggest that a waterbase urethane would provide a more clear finish and would not amber but the customer originally had polyurethaned floors and was reticent to use waterbase urethane because of durability concerns.
I initially installed two rooms with several flush mount vents in accordance with NWFA standards and the customer was happy with the installation.
After the second stain application, I applied one coat of the polyurethane and the customer was livid with the color which were exactly as the samples I had provided in which he was satisfied and stated that it was the exact color. I had good rapport with the customer to this point before the polyurethane application. I also worked through the weekend to try and keep the client on schedule.
He told me I could I can leave the job with the inflection that said "Leave the Job!" and turned his back and went upstairs. Even if I misunderstood him after leaving, I reached out later that day, (early evening) via email and texting, the customer is an IT professional, to offer what would have been a resolution to the color by switching to a waterbase product. I reached out again the next day as well via text as I chose this method of communication to avoid confrontation, he ignored my communications. I have a record of this.
I did not charge the customer $ 8000 dollars as the job was not completed. They only paid for supplies, $ 2000.00
It is always my goal to provide the best service I can to meet and exceed the customer's expectations when possible. I take pride in my work and strive for successful outcomes.
Sincerely,
Lee Tuttle
