Jenkins Hardwood Flooring

We had a lot of work done - refinished the main floor including some repair work, installed site finished hardwood upstairs, had our banister refinished and spindles replaced, new baseboards and door frames installed. We were initially impressed when Scott came out to give us the quote - he was able to figure out some solutions for us and quickly come up with a plan to get us the best bang for our buck. He had good ideas but the execution was rushed and sloppy, and after we signed the contract he became increasingly harder and harder to get a hold of. There were many delays and unanswered emails texts, and phone calls all with different excuses. Covid, emails "bounced back" mysteriously, flooded basement, car trouble, out of town on business, family emergency, etc, etc. After we paid the balance we owed him we discovered some flaws that needed to be repaired. At that point we had to resort to using friends and family's phones because he wouldn't pick up when he would see our number. The repair work was completed well and about 70% of the floors were finished well, but there was a lot of substandard work: - There are scratches and gauges in the spindles that were installed. - The spindles were cut too short so they don't reach the banister fully. - There are gauges and chunks missing from the new posts that were installed. - There are several holes in the hardwood that was installed and then filled with wood filler and stain and look like crap. This is particularly frustrating because they aren't long boards. 1-2 feet and could have very easily been swapped out to avoid the eye sore. - There are so many swirls in our kitchen. I have read that having some are normal and to be expected but this is the entire floor. - There are nails sticking out of our doorframes that were reframed. Some of the above was completed by a subcontractor. Firstly, Scott did not tell us that he was going to be contracting out any of the work. Secondly, he won't take any responsibility for the contractor's work and didn't seem to understand how it is ultimately his responsibility as we signed a contract with him, not this other contractor. He just kept saying thisngs like, "well it's not me..." He will not come to repair the mistakes made, after he initially told us he would, because of personal problems. Yet he continues to post photos on his instagram account of all the work he is doing for other clients. He's clearly still working, just can't be bothered to finish up with us. He doesn't seem to take pride in the quality of his work and has no honour to fulfill his contract to the best of his abilities.
