I make my beautiful furniture in my New Lynn studio, Auckland NZ. My aim is to produce inspired furniture that meets each client’s individual requirements to the highest standard through reused, reclaimed and sustainably sourced solid timber. "I want my furniture to speak for itself; I want the detail to be subtle. I want each piece of furniture I make to reveal its handcrafted honesty, its texture and its colour.” Design to manufacture - the process. Designing a project may take a short time period or be as long as two months. The completion of the piece may take a similar period, depending on my workshop’s programme. The first stage of the process is meeting to discuss requirements and ideas with the client. Next, concept sketches are prepared for consultation with the client. Advice is given on what timber to use, appropriate finishes and how the design is to be manufactured. The project is reviewed, materials and finish are finalized and an estimation of cost is given. At this point in the process there is no charge but all drawings and designs remain the property of ChristopherLaurens if the project does not proceed. Once the client has approved the project, a written agreement will confirm the design details, the total cost of the project and a time-frame for completion depending on the size and complexity of the commission.
