How high should tiling go - We have bascially the same layout for kitchen and we are planning to just make a small row of tiles with a rounded border on top to give it that finish look. It will be about half the height from where the window is all around the kitchen. Not all the way up on either side. What are you thoughts? »
Jeanne Finnerty I would need more information to comment, ie cabinet color, counter top material, tile color/pattern/size. Good design results from many integrated decisions that combine to achieve a common goal.
Jeanne Finnerty The cabinetry was custom made as per my design and detail drawings. I love to design kitchens and cabinetry. It is all about proportions and details. Thank you for the compliment! Custom cabinets are not out of reach...check with your experienced local interior designers.
Jeanne Finnerty There are so many variables. This kitchen was done in conjunction with a full basement renovation. Check with a local design professional in your area for some guidelines.
Jeanne Finnerty The footprint of the home is 500 sq ft. I cant find the email address you shared with me the other day- let me know if you would like more information.
Love the galley layout and design! - My Phila kitchen is approx. the same size and I'm ready for a remodel. Couldn't remove my kitchen door, but would love to break through into adjoining dining room. Do you do long distance design? »
Jeanne Finnerty yes, the tight space required an unusual placement...to the left of the range. We disgiused the panel to look like a drawer and cabinet door.
Jeanne Finnerty The back splash tile is a cream crackle tile by Waterworks. It is designed with slight imperfections to give it more of a hand-made quality.
Jeanne Finnerty The fir floor is original to this late 19th cent row house- it was covered with tile, but, once sanded and refinished - it looks antiqued and quite nice.
Jeanne Finnerty Well- if you haven't finished your renovation by now...I hope these plans are helpful!
The kitchen is 42" between cabinets, overall 7'-6" x 11'. See before and after plans.
hkflygirl Thank you so much! I haven't even started the project. getting ready to retile the floor throughout the house, at which time the kitchen will come down.
Jeanne Finnerty HI- To keep things very simple - I designed a single-panel, garage-style door above the hood. It is 30" w. and approx 12"h. The interior of the cabinet has a jog which accommodates the venting of the hood. All the upper cabinets are 14" d.
Jeanne Finnerty My client is a wonderful gardener and this is her beautiful plant. I know she shops at Haskell's in New Bedford, MA. I don't know what species it is.
bbellflower So wide open meaning... no shelves, no pull out's? Maybe the client is storing large items in those back corners that are not used very often. One would think it would be awkward to retrieve those items. None the less, this is an outstanding design and it's on my wish list for my future kitchen. Thank you for all your information. All your designs are beautiful! :)
Jeanne Finnerty correct- she preferred awkwardness to losing the 2' x 2' corner "dead" space to the left of the dishwasher and to the right of the sink cabinet. best with your kitchen- i would be happy to design it for you :)
Jeanne Finnerty HI Cams- sorry i did not see this sooner! My client requested a small microwave for this kitchen- so I made room for one in the far left cabinet to the left of the the hood. it is a std cabinet door (14" d uppers)- with a microwave sitting inside- such a low tech and easy solution.
Jeanne Finnerty This counter top is pietra cardosa honed- with a flamed finish. it is really beautiful, not granite or marble---but, another natural material.
6. Keep it clean and clutter free. In a small space, even a few things left out can make the whole place feel like a mess. Pare down to only your favorite and most essential belongings, and make a habit of cleaning and clearing clutter at the start of each season. Keeping attractive bowls, baskets, bins and hooks at the ready will ensure that picking up is a breeze.Clutter Clearing 101
Dishwashing meditation. You don't have to be a Zen Buddhist to practice a little mindfulness. I like to meditate when I'm washing dishes; I zero in on how the water clears the messes of the day, all laid out on a single plate, with a few sponge swipes and a thorough rinse. Add a little aromatherapy with a lemon verbena soap and I'm as content as a monk.
2. Paint cabinets the same color as the walls. Limiting the cabinetry and the wall color to a single hue erases visual boundaries that might stop the eye. The conventional school of thought is that pale colors will reflect light and make the space feel bigger, and that's certainly a safe approach. But don't be afraid to go dark, either. Deep tones such as black, navy, charcoal and chocolate recede visually and create the impression that the walls are farther back than they really are.
Small KitchensAppliances can be tricky in kitchens with limited square footage. While a smaller kitchen may have a more straightforward work triangle, sometimes it just won't work with the layout. Even so, a smaller area also makes it easy to keep everything close at hand.

Basic shape of my kitchen now, a bit wider. My stove on Left, want to move to R for more counter space. Will have refrig to R of stove with only 12 inches available between stove/refrig.
