Kitchen Transformation traditional kitchen

Kitchen Transformation

This kitchen was formerly a dark paneled, cluttered, divided space with little natural light. By eliminating partitions and creating a more functional, open floorplan, as well as adding modern windows with traditional detailing, providing lovingly detailed built-ins for the clients extensive collection of beautiful dishes, and lightening up the color palette we were able to create a rather miraculous transformation. The wide plank salvaged pine floors, the antique french dining table, as well as the Galbraith & Paul drum pendant and the salvaged antique glass monopoint track pendants all help to provide a warmth to the crisp detailing.

These pendants are brass pendants with vintage glass originally from Conant Custom Brass in Vermont and I believe they are 7 inches in diameter at the largest. They are now called Conant Metal and Light and they say, "The pendants are our custom pendant, in a standard finish they are $169.00."

You will find this question has been asked a number of times. . . our client found this salvaged farmhouse sink many years ago anticipating this home renovation. We designed the kitchen around it. Unfortunately, we have yet to find one quite like this.

Yes, this is a terrific sink. This is a salvage sink collected by our client years ago, I am afraid I can't help other than to suggest contacting a salvage house like Vermont Salvage in White River Junction, VT. These dimensions might help: the overall width is four feet three inches and has two bowls. Please also see some of the other posts to this question, some other salvage suppliers might have something similar. Good luck!

I have this sink in a single bowl model (needs resurfacing but I have a source who did our bathtub 10 years ago and it still looks great so I could refer you to them) that I was going to use but opted for stainless instead. Mine's available for $400 plus shipping or you can pick it up in Cartersville, GA. You can reach me through my ad on Craig's list at http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/app/4390582078.html

Good guess! It is actually back about two feet from this image on the right. There is a thick zone in the plane of the stairs which we used for storage and microwave on the left and the fridge on the right. I believe it is a black kitchen aid. The open cabinets in this pic don't really contain stuff I'd wanna show off (more due to how much is there rather than the content)! lol... however, regarding the dust issue I think doors with glass (clear or frosted) would be much better! Of course this comes from a home with several furry family members and 4 kids! haha... I do love this kitchen from what I can see here! :) Totally my style!!...

We have a similar table with deep apron that made it difficult to get a chair under so we had 4 inch wooden "boots" made to match the legs. It is not obvious that the legs were extended.

Wow, thanks for the practical tip - we are now considering that. Do you use your table as an island with barstool seating? If so, what height chair measurement (seat to floor) do you recommend? Thanks SO much.

The backsplash is cut from the same slab in the fabricator's shop, so the veining aligns. The thickness is cut down by a half inch for the backsplash, so 3/4" versus 1 1/4" for the counter.

Hello,
Yes, this is a similarly old sink and was salvaged by our client. I have not found one new that is quite this large. You may have luck looking at salvage stores like Vermont Salvage in White River Junction in Vermont.

Hello,
The fridge is behind you and to the right from the vantage point of this image. There are a few more nooks - one for dish and drink storage tucked in under the stair, and one for microwave with more shelves and pantry items in low drawers. There is also a bookcase on the other side of the room for cookbooks. Needless to say, every inch of usable space was utilized well.
Hope that helps!

Yes, but start with a small sample and paint it either on a sample board or small part of a wall to see how close the match is once the paint dries. A board allows you to move the sample around in different light conditions.

The backsplash is the same as the countertops - Danby Marble. This was purchased through Shaker Hill Granite Co. in Enfield VT. Danby Marble is the stone where most of the monuments in Washington D.C. are quarried from.

I found the Kohler K-12700-0 Gilford 30 x 22 Apron Front Wall Mount Self Rimming Kitchen Sink. They might offer other sizes. check efaucets.com. I checked reviews and they were good. Owners also recommended getting the bottom basin rack, a metal rack that sits in the bottom to protect the sink. I will definitely get one of those.

We have had very good success with honed countertops. This particular counter is danby marble and one consideration which can't be overlooked is that acids, such as lemon juice will eat at the marble.

Try a search under ink drawings, drawings, charcoal drawings, black and white illustrations or etchings because it looks like the art was created with ink or charcoal. It looks like a funky portrait with several hidden portraits, but as an abstract artist I tend to see images that others don't, so it could be something else entirely. It's a shame we can't zoom in on this image to look for a signature (my signature is usually very visible, but each artist is different), but maybe the architect or interior decorator can get the name from their client for you. The only other sites I can think of that might have something similar are ArtFido, Artspan, DeviantArt, Red Bubble or Saatchi--if something grabs your attention, ask the artist if they can create commissioned work for you, then negotiate the price. The artist should be able to give you a broad range of prices, but prepared to spend money (my lowest price is US$90.00, but the image shown here is nowhere near my style).

What Houzz contributors are saying:

The next part of the house contains the kitchen/dining room on the first floor, and measures 16 feet wide by 20 feet deep. This is perhaps the most dramatic transformation in the home; you will not believe the "Before" shot, next."We wanted to maximize storage without losing light, so we used very few upper cabinets," Smith says. "We also tried to create storage pieces that looked like furniture." The china cabinet on the left is this kind of piece, and displays more of the client's collections.
Lawrence Karol added this to Expert Talk: Infuse Your Kitchen With Art
Juxtapose modern and traditional elements. “The kitchen in this house doubles as the dining room, so we made a deliberate attempt to downplay the kitchen aspects of the space,” explains Pi Smith of Smith & Vansant Architects. “There are no upper cabinets, lots of windows, and storage is handled with a built-in hutch that’s tucked away under the stairs. The art reflects my client's diverse collection of works. I don't think she viewed the kitchen as needing to be handled in a special way. Rather she selected pieces she liked and wanted to live with that both fit the available space and added a rich, modern counterpoint to the charm and historical quality of the building. Her art and lighting selections, in particular, speak to the fact that this project is not locked in time, but very much a product of contemporary life.”
1. Open shelving. In a classic farmhouse kitchen, wall-mounted shelves and doorless cabinets keep dishware and utensils easy to locate and grab. If your kitchen has traditional upper and lower banks of cabinetry, consider removing some of the doors for the look of open shelving, or replace upper cabinets with floating or bracketed shelves.
12. Remind yourself why you are doing this ... Clicking through your inspiration photos is a great way to get juiced up about your project all over again. You can also try simply closing your eyes and visualizing your home project completed, vividly imagining every little detail, and how wonderful it will feel to have it all done.... and know when to get out of town. Of course there are times when it's best to admit it's time for a break. Latex Allergy Some people tend to ignore or forget about the potential for a latex allergy in rugs. Many rugs use a latex backing to prevent the rug from sliding across a hard floor. This latex may cause an allergic reaction in some sensitive people. A latex allergy will differ from a dust allergy in that the symptoms may include swelling of the skin or a rash.
