Piperbear Designs
Purchased by Piperbear in 2012 from the original owners, this 1950s Cape Cod needed a complete stylistic makeover. The wall between the kitchen and dining room was mostly removed, and the kitchen was redone with a new layout, granite countertops and new appliances; the downstairs bathroom was updated with new fixtures and period appropriate black and white hexagon tile. Upstairs, 220 feet of square footage was added by raising the roof and pushing into the dormers, creating a new full bathroom and laundry area.

This upper story originally had two bedrooms and a small bath with no tub or shower. The space was opened up to become a master suite with a full bath and sitting room.
Align Design LLC
Built in drawers that were in one of the bedrooms, were salvaged and recessed into unused, attic space, creating more storage in the master suite. Not shown in the photos is a walk in closet that utilizes more of the unused attic space. A sitting room adjacent to the bedroom, provides privacy for tv viewing or reading.

Turned attic storage space into two bedrooms for my kids. Did it all myself so it cost around $120 in paint and polyurethane, $15 in sandpaper for the floors, around $8 for spackle and wood filler, and $15 for trim. A couple of dollars for plastic to cut out polka dot templates. Used pieces of old sheet-rock to patch holes in the walls, so well under $200 for everything. Turned a closet into a little reading room. There are some before shots taken before I bought the house.

Originally constructed in 1937 as the centerpiece of a country estate, the new owners elected to give their home a complete interior makeover before moving in. The kitchen was enlarged and modernized as was the master bedroom and bath on the fl oor above it. Three wings were added to the original home, one to house the garage, mud room, laundry and “Gentleman’s Retreat” on the lower level and a children’s/guest bedroom and bath on the upper level.
The addition at the middle rear of the house holds a family dining area screened pavilion with a large walk-in closet connected to the master bedroom upstairs. The third addition is an all-season, enclosed pavilion space at the west end of the house. The renovations and additions presented challenges, especially at the front entrance where a dark closeted stair to the upper level was opened up to flood the entire two level entry hall with natural daylight.
The project was featured in a ten-page spread in the May 2011 issue of Chesapeake Home + Living magazine.
