This garden was designed to celebrate panoramic views of the San Gabriel mountains. Horizontal bands of slate tile from the interior of the mid-century home wrap around the house’s perimeter and extend to the rear pool area, inviting the family outdoors. With a pool framed by mature trees, a sunken seating area, fruit trees, and a modest lawn for a young family, the landscape provides a wide range of opportunities for play, entertaining and relaxation.

This corner of the patio is the perfect place for an outdoor fire pit. The family can enjoy the view and some of the residual heat but it's out of the way enough that it doesn't take up any seating space. With the gorgeous gray concrete pavers for the patio, we were able to match the fire pit with lovely gray stacked stone and a flagstone top. The lovely curvilinear shape of the stone patio is counteracted with the straight edges of the pavers. The custom outdoor kitchen is perfectly placed under the covered patio so the master chef can stay cool in the shade with the ceiling fans on. Step down to the sunken eating area for an indoor feeling in the open air of this Matthews backyard retreat.

Designed to embrace an extensive and unique art collection including sculpture, paintings, tapestry, and cultural antiquities, this modernist home located in north Scottsdale’s Estancia is the quintessential gallery home for the spectacular collection within. The primary roof form, “the wing” as the owner enjoys referring to it, opens the home vertically to a view of adjacent Pinnacle peak and changes the aperture to horizontal for the opposing view to the golf course. Deep overhangs and fenestration recesses give the home protection from the elements and provide supporting shade and shadow for what proves to be a desert sculpture. The restrained palette allows the architecture to express itself while permitting each object in the home to make its own place. The home, while certainly modern, expresses both elegance and warmth in its material selections including canterra stone, chopped sandstone, copper, and stucco.

Rock outcroppings make a striking background for new lounge areas in this compact Los Angeles hillside garden. Working with the attributes of the site, we added native plants to drape over the stone, and converted hollowed stone planters into a firepit and water feature. New built-in seating and a cozy hammock complete the relaxing space, and dramatic lighting makes it come alive at night.

The client wanted to use this terrace for entertainment. All we needed was a proper layout, lighting, make it fun and functional. Budget was a question so we avoided any contracting work, mixed affordable and expensive items. The outdoor barbecue existed, so I added in a firepit table, RGB led lighted planters and cube stools, purchased aluminum planters from CB2 and had it painted in red (the client likes warm colors), outdoor furnitures from CB2 and voila !! Oh of course let's not forget the pillows and throw.
