I have the same intention in regards to the ceiling but I'm concern about the building code here in Chicago. I have a two flat and the first floor is duplex down with the basement and I assume the code calls for a fire rated ceiling. How did you managed to get those plans approved?

The open joists really accentuate the head height in a low space. We were able to achieve this open look because we are a single family dwelling. Thanks for your inquiry.
