There are many nuances to designing a kitchen. Usually 42" is okay for a one person kitchen between island and cabinets. If you have two people, we'd recommend 48" to 54". That may increase if you have teenagers, use the space as a walkway to another room, or have the refrigerator open in the walkway. There are a host of different dimensions for different purposes.
