The last thing that you want is a ripe yellow squash unless you want to save seeds. These are used as immature squash, the smaller the better. The antiques do have warts, but I have never seen one change any while off the vine or make noise. Check to make sure you don't have worms inside.

Hm, I always thought that warts on a yellow squash were signs of over-ripening. I pick them well before they get warts, but that's just a habit of mine that I don't have any factual back-up for. I'll look forward to more knowledgeable responses.
