New crop means a new bug pest

This year I planted tomatillos and ground cherries for the first time and voila a new nasty bug never before seen in my 8 year old garden - the three-lined potato beetle. Yuck! The regular old Colorado potato beetle pales in comparison. These are more hideous and more voracious, and they apparently much prefer the nice tender leaves of the tomatillos and ground cherries to anything else, at least so far. They think diatomaceous earth is candy. Even soap and water spray doesn't deter them. Where did they come from? I started my tomatillos and ground cherries indoors from seeds.
I have been doing regular bug patrols several times a day and I think my fingers are permanently stained from squishing the nasty buggers.
Is there anything else I can do to stop the onslaught? (organically)
