I didn't know there was a CPB-variant. Is it known to favor tomato/tomatillo over potato? The eleven stripe they say will go after tomato but I haven't had it happen.

From my reading about them, they are also known as the "old-fashioned" potato beetle. They munch in herds and can decimate a leaf in a couple of hours. When they are young, they look like tiny black slugs. When they are grown up they are disgusting yellow slug-like creatures covered with their own excrement.
What amazes me is how they found my garden. I live on a farm in an area where no one has even heard of tomatillos or ground cherries. I have never encountered a wild ground cherry ever.
I had never seen the adult beetle before so I didn't kill it when I had the chance, since I don't want to kill the good guys.

They probably also eat some other wild nightshade when not chowing down on your ground cherries. Pat, I have 11-stripes in my tomatoes this year. Not really sure why, they haven't before, but whatever the reason I squish them just the same.

Yes, I agree with the new crop, new bug reality. Planted sunflowers for the first time and got the sunflower beetle added to my repertoire. Hand picked them off - they did not last long.
