reconditioning raspberries

I cleaning out my raspberry patch. After I cut out last years bearing canes, there isn't much left. I have a few plants around the yard I can put in; but, should I dig up the patch and put the canes in a pretty row. The patch is at least 5 years old and I have have lost some to drought and disease.
Also, the canes are in a row in a raised mound (about a foot high and two wide). I'm not sure why this was done. The patch has been there long enough for canes to move downslope away from the centre.
