What grass for shade and dogs In NC?

I live in Charlotte, NC and I have a large fenced backyard that has large trees, small patches of grass and the ground is slightly sloped. I also have two German shepherds that might spend two hours a day in the yard, sometimes more on weekends. I want to start growing grass out there and I do not care too much about appearance because it is more of a natural area than anything. I do not care if it turns brown in winter or if the dogs wear a few paths as long as it covers the dirt and keeps them from tracking mud or dust into the house. I thought I might try to cultivate and seed half the yard to get it started and I can put up a barrier fence to keep the dogs off the grass until it is established. I am pretty new to this and the more I read about what types of grass to grow the more confused I get. Basically I am looking for a grass that will grow in shade and sun and that is hardy enough for dogs. Something that grows fast would not hurt either. Am I asking too much?
