Need decision fast, fescue or zoysia seed now?

Hello all,

I was trying to not get into this situation, but have building my own home over the last year and this week, (May 5th) I will just be getting the lawn graded and ready to seed.

The problem is I have 2 young boys and a small dog, and do not want to deal with mud and no grass until this fall. We hope to move in late July at the latest, so have 2-3 months to get something establised.

Bermuda is out because the yard is open, but surrounded by trees, so I think that even though most of it gets 5-7 hours of sun a day, may not be enough?

So, do I chance trying to get a good tall fescue to grow now, since the only irrigation I will have is hoses and movable sprinklers, or since I have a good clean soil bed, try the zenith or companion zoysia seed route?? I know it is slow to establish, but this should be the prime time to plant zoysia, and 2-3 months should be pretty well established??

Look into Diamond Zoysia at New Life Turf in Norway, SC

If you can get a price, please come back and let us know what it is.

Diamond seems to be a fairly aggressive version of zoysia. I am experimenting with another aggressive version called Shadow Turf. I suspect they might be the same grass but will probably never know for sure.

unfortunately sod is out of the question since I will be doing about 3/4 of an acre, so would most likely be looking at the zenith seeded version, tall fescue, centipede? or other seeding options?

I was in this same situation about a week ago; ended up going with the tall fescue and it's sprouting really well.
A lady at the store says she planted 3 acres of this and it has been doing fine down here in FL so I mean if it will take the summer then go for it. Zoysia can really be invasive and at least down here can get nemotodes and it needs more nutrients. I'm really pleased how fast the fescue has sprouted, it's like an instant lawn. Good luck!
