Chaenomeles japonica

Looks like your shrub may have the taller, larger-branched habit of C. speciosa. Size of flowers would also be more like that one - I'm inclined to think that's what it is. But perhaps the flowers may still show some characteristics of C. japonica - if this is true it could be explained by there also being a hybrid between these two grown, C. X superba. Many of the named cultivars belong to this last.

this flowering shrub can be tamed.. somewhat .... thru REJUVENATION PRUNING ... google that term ...

watch out for errant large thorns ...

jelly can be made form SOME of the varieties.. not others ...

one of my faves for its early.. deep, intense coloration ... though you need a lot of space for it and its a short show.. i might not waste the space in a small suburban garden ...

C. japonica tends to be low and bushy. One of the more prevalent C. X superba cultivars that also has a low habit is 'Cameo'. This is luscious and profuse in bloom, however with the taller types you can train them flat against walls, which makes the individual flowers show up much better.
