I'm no expert, but I think you can just put them in buckets of water and wait and see if they start to sprout. Hardy lilies are very hardy!
I planted one in the ground to store over winter once and never dug it up and it keeps making leaves!
Did you leave them in moist soil over the winter? The fact that they feel solid is a good sign. Hopefully they didn't dry out if you didn't use any water.
Some people here don't even pot up their lilies, so I think you're fine just leaving them in water until they start growing......and you can tell which way is up!

Thank you, I appreciate the follow up. I did put them in an under the bed type tupperware container with water and put a 4 foot light over them. One of them is already forming leaves. Yea! Thanks again! Renee

I think I would just keep them outside without artificial light. They'll grow soon enough that way.
