Help needed with water lilie tubers.

I was given at least 30 water lily tubers last fall. I didn't have time or the pots to get them planted up before we started getting really cold temps. So I placed them all in a 5 gallon bucket filled with garden soil and placed them in my 50 degree attic all winter. I just pulled them out and they are all very solid but the roots are mush and I cannot find where the growing tip was. Am I assuming these tubers are still good because they are solid? If so, how do I plant these? Every article states to plant them with the growing tip up, slanting horizontally in the soil. Is there anyway I can start them in water without soil, under a grow light I have to see if they are viable and will start producing leaves? My other lilies do great left alone in the pond over winter so I never had this situation. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks! Renee
