Hi Susan - If you plan on using recessed lighting, space the cans no closer than 48" and no further apart than 60". Typically, look to align them with the architectural feature of the kitchen. So center them on windows, doorways, aisles, etc. or of that's not doable (as is often the case in a remodel), evenly space them so they make sense. As for type, the size of the kitchen and the height of the ceiling will inform your choice. There are different sizes (3" diameter, 5" diameter, etc.) and types. Look into LED lights. They will cost a little more up front but save you money down the road.

As a point of reference, the ceiling height in the photo is 8 feet. Are you working with an electrician or kitchen designer? If so, they should be able to give some guidance based on the specifics of your situation.
