There are rumors that some people use it as a psychedelic.
The seeds and possibly the entire plant is toxic from what I have heard.
I encourage it in my yard. It is beautiful and perennial although it dies to the ground every year.
I haven't had any problems with it. The gophers avoid areas where it grows so I grew sweet peas on the dry stalks one year.
I do worry about the dog getting the burs in fur and chewing the seed ball but so far, no problems
It is the seeds that are poisonous/psychedelic.

Thank you val and lucky; Well now I've got the Jamestown weed in the garden. All leaves collapsed after transplant, then revived to their partial state in 24 hours. I hope it makes it. It is indeed an eye catching specimen, and apparently native.

All parts of the lovely datura are toxic - contain dangerous levels of the tropane alkaloids.

They do open at night and attract some interesting visitors - particularly the Sphinx Moths or hummingbird moths. The scent is very fragrant, almost intoxicating. The spikey balls will mature and you'll have more seeds for planting.

I used to grow it, and I'm not one to be too intimidated by 'toxic' plants, since so many are. I just want to warn you that take care if you are saving seeds to keep them away from kids/pets. One of my cats got into my seed stash, and I had a couple of those spiky balls with seed in it and she somehow ingested some of it. She went nuts for several days, hiding and freaking out if you found her. It was then I found the seeds scattered on my desk. I am lucky I didn't lose her. I'm assuming it was just from mouthing on the seed pods and playing with them.

It is likely Datura stramonium which is not native to the US.
