Skimpy Euonymus

I have a Euonymus shrub (Emerald and Gold I think) that is looking a little skimpy. I can't remember exactly what happened... maybe someone stepped on it, but a while back (a year or maybe 2) the middle branches got broken so I snipped them off below the break. Unfortunately, they never grew back -- maybe because the break was so close to the crown. Anyway, it has some good branches with nice leaves, but it looks skimpy in the middle. Is there anything I can do to help fill it out?
It's in a pot now because I replaced it with a nandina in the planting bed, but I was hoping to either use it somewhere less prominent or give it away. I mean, it's alive, just kind of sparse.
I'm attaching a picture -- sorry my phone camera gives everything a blue tint.
